What courses should I take?
Course selection depends on your specific program requirements. Please refer to the Graduate Handbook for detailed degree requirements and course options.
As a new student, it鈥檚 strongly recommended that you begin with required core courses in your first semester to establish a solid foundation.
We also encourage you to schedule a meeting with the Graduate Program Director for personalized advising and to ensure you're on track with your academic plan.
Can I register for a Cost Recovery Course? How do I recognize Cost Recovery Courses in the Schedule Search?
At USF, Cost Recovery Courses are typically self-funded or self-supporting. If you have a Graduate Assistantship, please note that tuition waivers do not cover cost recovery courses鈥攜ou would be responsible for the full cost out of pocket. These courses may also not count toward certain types of financial aid, so it鈥檚 important to check with the Financial Aid Office if you have questions.
Cost recovery courses are usually offered through continuing education or professional programs. In the class schedule, you鈥檒l often see notes such as 鈥渇or students in this select program only鈥 and fees listed as $600 or more. These are key indicators that the course is part of a cost recovery program.
If you're ever unsure, feel free to reach out to the department before registering.
What should I do if I need to add or drop a course or courses after the drop/add deadline?
After the drop/add deadline, you鈥檒l need to complete a Graduate Petition via the Office of Graduate Studies.
1. Complete the form and have the instructor for each course you are adding or dropping sign the form
2. Upload the document into istart for approval from International Services (if you are an international student).
3. Write a short personal statement explaining your reason for the request.
4. Email your signed form and statement to ENG-MAEGrad@usf.edu.
Processing may take up to 7鈥10 business days after college submission.
What documents are required to apply for doctoral candidacy?
Candidacy applications involve two submissions, each with distinct requirements. Deadlines are announced at the start of each semester.
Missing deadlines could delay your candidacy by an entire term.
First submission:
- Supervisory Committee Form
- Affiliate Faculty Form (for non-USF graduate faculty)
- CV for any affiliate faculty committee member
- Faculty Advisor Statement (if the affiliate faculty member has no current research within the past 2 years, the faculty advisor must provide a statement explaining their relevancy to the committee)

What forms do I need to complete a thesis or dissertation defense?
As you prepare for your defense, please ensure you complete the following forms, which can be found on our website:
Graduate Forms: USF Mechanical Engineering Graduate Forms
- Completed by each committee member
- Collected and submitted by the faculty advisor to ENG-MAEGrad@usf.edu.
- Please send this form to Catherine Burton.
3. ETD Certificate of Approval:
- This form is signed by your committee once your written thesis is approved.
- Please send it to Catherine Burton as well.
How do I apply for Graduation?

As a PhD Student, can I apply for a Master鈥檚 Along the way (MATW)?
Yes! You can apply at the beginning of the semester you plan to complete the MATW requirements. Please note that all catalog requirements must be satisfied based on the term in which you apply. Deadlines are announced each semester.
Submit the following:
- Graduation Checklist
- MSME Non-Thesis Plan of Study
- Portfolio of two project reports
- MATW Form
Note: OASIS will still display "Ph.D." when applying. This will update to 鈥淢S鈥 after the form is processed.

Is a faculty mentor required for acceptance to the PhD Program?
Yes, a faculty mentor is required for admission to the PhD program. While all submitted PhD applications are reviewed by our faculty, we strongly encourage applicants to reach out to faculty members whose research aligns with their interests. This helps explore potential mentorship opportunities and strengthen your application.

Are Graduate Assistantships offered as part of the admission process?
Graduate assistantships (TAs and RAs) are awarded based on departmental needs and faculty selection 鈥 not automatically through admission. PhD students are most likely to be offered these positions.

What if I don鈥檛 have a degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field?
To ensure a smooth transition into the graduate program, students are expected to have completed the following prerequisite courses during their undergraduate studies:
Required:
- Calculus I, II, III
- Differential Equations
- Thermodynamics
- Solid Mechanics
Highly Recommended:
- Heat Transfer
- Fluid Mechanics
- Dynamics
You may complete prerequisites as a non-degree-seeking student at USF or another accredited institution before applying.
To take undergraduate prerequisite courses, please apply for Non-Degree Seeking Admission. Once admitted, you鈥檒l be able to to register for the appropriate courses.
What is the cost of tuition and fees?
USF offers a in their Office of Graduate Studies portal. You can select your specific program and projected credit load to see a detailed breakdown. This tool accounts for tuition, mandatory fees, and other costs. Additional fees (health insurance, student activity, program-specific fees) are typically charged on top of tuition, depending on program and residency.
