USF Family Medicine opens Acute Care Clinic to expand access to timely outpatient services

USF Health recently opened its new Acute Care Clinic at the 17 Davis Medical Building, marking a major step in expanding access to timely outpatient care across the Tampa Bay region.

Operated by the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Department of Family Medicine in partnership with USF Tampa General Physicians, this is the second acute care clinic within the USF Health system and the first located on the Davis Islands campus.

The new clinic provides same-day appointments for general medical needs and minor illnesses, as well as follow-up care for patients recently discharged from USF Health or Tampa General Hospital (TGH). It also serves as a resource for patients who are unable to see their regular primary care provider in a timely manner.

鈥淭his clinic represents the next step in how we deliver innovative, patient-centered care,鈥 said Mark G. Moseley, MD, MHA, president of USF Tampa General Physicians and professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. 鈥淏y focusing on timely, accessible acute care in an outpatient setting, we鈥檙e not only improving outcomes for our patients but also helping to shape the future of primary care delivery across our health system.鈥濃

The new clinic aligns with USF Health鈥檚 鈥淭hink Ambulatory First鈥 initiative, a strategic approach to prioritize treatment for acute, non-emergent conditions in outpatient settings 鈥 helping to increase patient access, improve efficiency and reduce hospital admissions.

The transformation of the 17 Davis space began in April 2024. The project involved a comprehensive renovation to model the 鈥淭hink Ambulatory First鈥 approach and support the clinic鈥檚 operations, including the installation of new IT infrastructure and medical equipment, as well as clinical and administrative furniture.鈥

A multidisciplinary team of USF Health clinicians, administrators and leaders collaborated to develop the clinic鈥檚 care delivery model. Their work included establishing clinical protocols, scheduling guidelines and operational workflows tailored to patient needs.

鈥淭he opening of this clinic was truly a group effort, with support from a number of different entities with USF Tampa General Physicians, USF Health and Tampa General Hospital,鈥 said Anna Griffiths Downer, LAT, ATC, clinical manager in the USF Health Department of Family Medicine. 鈥淲e are excited about expanding the USF Health Family Medicine footprint to the southern campus, which will allow us to provide world-class care to patients with acute medical needs.鈥

The Acute Care Clinic at 17 Davis is accepting patients and and operates operates from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.鈥疨atients must be established within the USF Health or TGH patient network to schedule an appointment.
